Hyderabad, March 5 ( Shoukat-PMI) In a major gubernatorial reshuffle, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Shiv Pratap Shukla as the new Governor of Telangana. The announcement was made late Thursday night through a communiqué issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Shukla, who is currently serving as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, will replace the incumbent Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. Varma has been transferred as Governor of Maharashtra as part of the latest round of gubernatorial appointments.
A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the 73-year-old Shukla previously served as Minister of State for Finance in the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2017 to 2019. He also represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha.
Born on April 1, 1952, in Rudrapur in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, Shukla studied law in Gorakhpur and began his political journey through student activism with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He formally joined the BJP in 1983 and went on to serve multiple terms as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council before entering the Rajya Sabha.
Shukla has been serving as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh since 2023.
As part of the reshuffle, Kavinder Gupta, currently the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed as the new Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
In other key changes, Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, has been transferred to Ladakh, while former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. Additionally, Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed Governor of Nagaland, Syed Ata Hasnain as Governor of Bihar, and RN Ravi, currently Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been transferred to West Bengal.
