Hyderabad, April 21 (PMI): The State unit of BJP today’s urged the governor of the state Tamilisai Soundararajan to invoke her special powers as the custodian of Indian constitution and advise the State Election Commission (SEC) to postpone the upcoming local body elections for two municipal corporations and five municipalities .
The national OBC morcha president of the party Dr. K. Laxman, former MLA NVSS Prabhakar and other party leaders wrote a letter to the governor on the issue and urged the governor to intervene into the matter.
In their letter, they told the governor that the reported second wave of Covid-19 had been playing havoc with the lives and livelihoods of the people across the nation and added that the situation in Telangana had also reached alarming proportions as the number of cases have been increasing manifold each day. They said that the Telangana state reported over 6000 positive cases on Wednesday alone and 18 deaths. “There are reports that the number of deaths each day is much higher than what is being revealed. Despite the grave situation, the Telangana government has been non-serious in controlling the pandemic. It has miserably failed in ramping up health infrastructure in the state nor has it taken any proactive measures in gearing up the state machinery in terms of preparing for the unprecedented yet anticipated medical emergency,” they said.
They said that the State Election Commission understandably in consultation with the State Government had announced Local Body elections for the 5 municipalities and 2 corporations and added that the government hadn’t applied its mind in doing so for the announcement came on April 16 of this month by which time Corona had already created a horrendous situation in the state. They added that the election notification came while the fear-stricken people of Telangana were running from pillar to post in search of beds, oxygen, medicines and finally space in the graveyards.
They alleged that the CM of the state wanted to finish the elections before the announcement of results of 5 state elections on May 2 next month as he thought the declaration of the results of the five state assembly elections would have a cascading effect on the state of Telangana. (PMI)
