Biden under pressure over Gaza war

16-12-2023

WASHINGTON/ JERUSALEM: US President Biden says he wants Israel to be ‘focused on how to save civilian lives’ after adviser Jake Sullivan’s meeting with Israeli PM Netanyahu focused on shift from “high-intensity” phase of conflict in Gaza.

Palestinian telecommunications firms say services cut in Gaza once again, as Israel attacks locations across the enclave. Gaza’s government media office says a communications blackout means it will be even more difficult to reach the dead and injured.

Israel concludes a day-long raid in Jenin, killing at least 11 civilians. However, Israeli forces are conducting other overnight raids across the West Bank.

At least 18,787 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel stands at 1,147.

On the other hand, Israeli forces have ended their most extensive raid yet in the occupied West Bank, leaving in its wake 11 Palestinians dead and arresting hundreds of others but operations continue elsewhere in the occupied territory, with five Palestinians reported injured overnight in the town of Silat al-Harithiya, just west of Jenin, which was the centre of the previous deadly raid.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa described the condition of the injured people as stable.

Separate raids were also carried out in the following areas;

In the town of Yatta, south of Hebron, an Israeli raid resulted in the injury of one person and the arrest of two others. Another man was also injured within the city itself, after Israeli forces fired live ammunition.

In the town of Nahalin, west of Bethlehem, Israeli forces fired bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas at Palestinian residents.

In the village of Urif, south of Nablus, Israeli forces arrest three Palestinian residents, after raiding several homes as well as the village council.

In the town of Ya’bad, Israeli forces set up barriers, stopping vehicles and interrogating passengers and residents.

In Kafirat, the military also set up a checkpoint at the entrance to the village, while in Jericho, its soldiers interrogated the village chief of Fasayil.

Hundreds of Jewish protesters and pro-Palestinian supporters have blocked traffic in downtown Boston to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

The protest group IfNotNow, a Jewish lobby group advocating for the US to end support for “Israel’s apartheid system”, posted video footage and photos from central Boston’s business district where it said 15 lanes of traffic had been blocked. (Int’l News Desk)
