Hyderabad, August 5(PMI) – A section of road at Naveen Nagar in Banjara Hills caved in on Tuesday morning after a 10,000-litre private water tanker passed over a weakened nala (drain), causing it to collapse. Though the incident led to major traffic disruption in the area, no injuries or casualties were reported.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m., a day after heavy rains hit the city. According to local sources, the tanker, reportedly en route from Maheshwari Chambers, was crossing the nala when the structure gave way, pulling down part of the road with it.
Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the city’s traffic police rushed to the spot to assess the damage and regulate traffic. The driver of the tanker fled the scene soon after the collapse.
Several vehicles were left stranded, and traffic in the upscale neighbourhood was thrown out of gear. Commuters were advised to take alternative routes as the affected stretch was cordoned off for safety and repair work.
GHMC officials stated that the nala may have been structurally compromised due to years of poor maintenance, and the added weight of the heavy tanker likely led to the sudden cave-in. Preliminary investigations point to long-term weakening of the underground drainage system exacerbated by the recent rains and frequent movement of heavy vehicles.
Angry residents criticised the civic body for failing to address long-standing infrastructure issues, highlighting the risk posed to public safety.
Authorities have initiated a detailed inspection of other vulnerable spots in the area to prevent further incidents.(pressmediaofindia.com)
