NEW YORK: A killer Arctic freeze has killed 27 across America as ice storms continue to pound the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast braces for more snow.
Several of those deaths have been attributed to hypothermia and car accidents on frozen roads as arctic conditions grip the nation.
Tens of millions face the bitter cold from snowstorms that are set to continue into next week.
Portland, Oregon is carpeted with a quarter-inch of ice due to Winter Storm Indigo, and power is down for more than 70,000 customers as of Wednesday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us.
Downed trees in the region have damaged properties and caused fatalities. A fallen branch caused a downed power line to smash into a car.
The incident caused three deaths and injured a two-year-old in Portland on Wednesday morning.
Storm Indigo has will continue to make its path east this week, The Weather Channel reports, carrying with it even more snowfall from Washington DC to New York later this week.
During the period in between, the East Coast will experience more regular winter conditions following a powerful cold front earlier in the week.
The unforgiving winter storms have caused pandemonium across the nation, leading to school closures and more than 10,500 flight delays, as well as a further 2,476 cancellations on Tuesday.
The lowest temperature recorder on Wednesday was recorded at -22 at Monticello, Kentucky.
A power line fell on a parked car in northeast Portland on Wednesday, killing three people and injuring a baby during an ice storm that turned roads and mountain highways treacherous in the Pacific Northwest.
Shortly before noon, dispatchers started receiving frantic calls about a downed power line and people appearing to be electrocuted, according to a statement from the city’s fire department. A branch had fallen on a power line, causing it to fall onto an SUV, the statement said.
As the chaotic situation unfolded, a resident grabbed the baby from one of the people lying in the street in a bid to save its life, according to the statement. The three killed two adults and one teenager were found dead upon firefighters’ arrival, and the baby was taken to a hospital.
It is believed the victims were electrocuted after they got out of the vehicle, the statement said.
The power company later deenergized the line, the statement added without specifying which company.
Around Portland, driving and even walking were virtually impossible as slick ice coated roads and sidewalks. Icicles dangled from roofs and cars, and ice encased branches, plants and leaves like thick glass. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
