Arab leaders meeting in Cairo on Gaza’s future

06-03-2025

CAIRO/ GAZA STRIP/ JERUSALEM: Arab leaders are meeting in Egypt’s capital for a summit focusing on Gaza’s reconstruction.

Israel’s Foreign Minister demands removal of Hamas from Gaza and return of captives before Israel agrees to phase two of ceasefire deal.

Israeli forces kill two Palestinians in southern Gaza after cutting off aid to the besieged enclave and reneging on the ceasefire deal.

Gaza’s Health Ministry has confirmed 48,388 Palestinian deaths in Israel’s war on Gaza while 111,803 people have been wounded. The Government Media Office updated its death toll to at least 61,709, saying thousands of Palestinians missing under the rubble are presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.

Earlier, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) says it has gathered 6.7 tonnes of “much-needed pharmaceutical and medical supplies” to send to hospitals in Gaza. However, due to the blockade, the supplies may not arrive as planned this week, it added.

“It’s imperative that aid access is now immediately resumed,” said Bob Kitchen, the IRC’s vice president of emergencies and humanitarian action, adding that the blocked medical supplies would help provide “life-saving trauma care” to thousands.

“With humanitarian needs sky high, more aid access is required, not less,” he said, adding that whether or not the Gaza ceasefire holds, Israel is obligated under international humanitarian law to facilitate aid delivery.

Meanwhile, it has been three days since Israel’s decision to halt humanitarian aid entering Gaza, as people here try to uphold traditions during the holy month of Ramadan. Vendors at the market in Khan Younis say they are selling their products very quickly, not because it’s Ramadan but due to the widely held idea that supplies are soon going to be dangerously low.

People are grappling with the uncertainty of what may lie ahead and are trying to prepare for the worst, in light of Israel’s repeated threats to cut off all kinds of basic necessities and to take action if Hamas does not accept to extend the first phase of the ceasefire agreement.

However, as Arab leaders prepare to meet in Cairo, Hamas has urged those present at the summit to “thwart” the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza.

“We look forward to an effective Arab role that ends the humanitarian tragedy created by the occupation in the Gaza Strip… and thwarts the [Israeli] occupation’s plans to displace (Palestinians),” a Hamas statement said.

Over in Egypt’s capital, live footage shows Arab leaders arriving at the venue for the summit.

The army claimed in a statement that a local Hamas leader Isser Saadi was among those killed.

Additionally, Israeli forces arrested three other “wanted operatives” during the operation, which expanded to new areas of occupied Jenin, it added.

As we’ve been reporting, Israel’s military has been carrying out a violent six-week raid in Jenin, in which at least 27 Palestinians have been killed.

Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will not attend Tuesday’s Arab summit on Gaza in Cairo, with his top diplomat heading the delegation instead, state media said. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
