Apex Court Dismisses Plea for Ban on Ilaiah’s Book—Freedom of Expression

New Delhi, The Supreme Court today dismissed the petition filed by the Arya Vysya leader and Advocate Veeranjaneyulu seeking ban on the book ‘Saamaajika Smugglerlu Komatollu’ written by Professor Kancha Ilaiah.

In a significant judgment, the court made it clear that it cannot order to ban the book just because it has created a controversy. The bench headed by Chief Justice Deepak Mishra opined that the court cannot forbid the book. By doing so, they will be curtailing freedom of expression.

The Apex Court, however, observed that they can only advise the authors to be self-contained. The Arya Vysya Association leader has filed the petition last month pleading for banning the book, contending that  it  insults their caste.
