Bollywood’s Beloved Comic Actor Asrani Passes Away at 84
Mumbai’Oct 20 (PMI) Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, the veteran Bollywood actor celebrated for his comic genius, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 84. The cause of his death has not been disclosed yet. His last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium on Monday.
Asrani’s contribution to Indian cinema spanned over five decades, with appearances in more than 350 films. A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he began his career in the mid-1960s, initially taking on serious and supporting roles before becoming one of Hindi cinema’s most beloved comic actors.
He rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, known for playing charming, humorous characters such as the witty sidekick or the comical clerk. His unforgettable performance as the quirky jailor in the classic film Sholay remains an iconic part of Bollywood history.
In addition to Hindi films, Asrani worked in Gujarati and Rajasthani cinema, and also ventured into directing, showcasing his versatility beyond acting. Throughout his career, he formed memorable comic partnerships with legends like Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna, and Govinda, bridging multiple generations of Bollywood comedy.
