Akbaruddin Owaisi: Musi and Esa Are No Longer Rivers, They Have Turned into Sewerage Channels

Hyderabad, Jan 2 nd, 2026 (PMI) AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi on Tuesday raised serious concerns in the Telangana Assembly over the Musi River rejuvenation project, cautioning that the livelihoods of the poor should not be destroyed in the name of river cleaning.

Participating in the debate on Musi rejuvenation during the second day of the Assembly session, Owaisi questioned the Congress government on the scope of the project. He asked whether the rejuvenation would begin from Vikarabad or from the middle of the river and demanded clarity on the plans from Vikarabad to Gandipet.

Owaisi sought details about the catchment areas of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs and pointed out that the Musi River ranks eighth among the most polluted rivers in the world. He remarked that the Musi and Esa are no longer rivers but have effectively become sewerage channels, as most of Hyderabad’s sewage flows into the Musi.

He further alleged that sewage water is also mixing into the Gandipet reservoir. Referring to Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, which were constructed decades ago, Owaisi urged the government to remove silt and enhance their storage capacity. Increasing the reservoirs’ capacity, he said, would make it possible to divert Godavari waters.

The AIMIM leader also questioned the status of the pedestrianization project near Charminar, which was launched three years ago, asking the government to explain what progress had been made. (pressmediaofindia.com)
