Pune, Nov 13 (PMI): A tragic multi-vehicle collision on the Pune–Bengaluru highway near Navale Bridge claimed at least eight lives and left over 20 others injured late Thursday evening. The accident occurred when two container trucks collided, trapping a car between them before all three vehicles burst into flames.
According to police officials, one of the trucks reportedly lost control due to brake failure, crashing into several vehicles and triggering a massive chain collision. The impact caused an intense fire that engulfed both containers and the car caught between them.
Emergency services, including Fire Brigade and Police teams, rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control after strenuous efforts. Rescue operations are ongoing to extricate the remains of the crushed car and recover the victims. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with several said to be in critical condition.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary findings point to speeding and possible mechanical failure.
An officer present at the site said, “A loaded container truck travelling from Satara to Mumbai suffered brake failure and rammed into 7–8 vehicles ahead, leading to a fiery chain reaction.”
Expressing grief over the tragedy, NCP–SP MP Supriya Sule posted on X, calling the incident “extremely sad and unfortunate” and extended her condolences to the bereaved families while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Notably, this marks the second major accident near the same bridge within two weeks. In the earlier incident, a truck carrying tiles lost control and hit multiple vehicles in the early hours of the morning (Pressmediaofindia.com)
