400 Israeli attacks on Hezbollah sites; raids Al Jazeera office

23-09-2024

JERUSALEM/ WEST BANK: Israel’s military launched 400 attacks on Lebanon on Saturday and Hezbollah fired rockets at the Ramat David base near the city of Haifa, in their largest exchange of fire since the war on Gaza began.

Heavily armed, masked Israeli troops raided Al Jazeera’s bureau in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah and imposed a 45-day closure in their latest push to curtail the network’s coverage.

Israeli forces killed at least 30 Palestinians in Gaza, including 22 displaced Palestinians in an attack on the Zeitoun School in Gaza City.

At least 41,391 people have been killed and 95,760 injured in Israel’s war on Gaza. In Israel, the number of those killed in the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 was at least 1,139 while more than 200 people were taken captive.

Izzat al-Risheq, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, described the closure order as “a retaliatory measure against its professional role in exposing the occupation’s crimes against our people”.

In a statement on Telegram, al-Risheq said that “closing Al Jazeera is an attempt to cover up the resistance’s performance in Gaza and Hezbollah’s response and targeting of military bases deep in the Zionist territory”.

He also described the decision as a blatant violation of press freedom and said that “the closure of Al Jazeera’s office is the culmination of the declared war against journalists who are subjected to systematic Zionist terrorism aimed at hiding the truth”.

The Lebanese armed group said it fired dozens of Fadi 1 and Wadi 2 missiles for a second time on Israel’s Ramat David Airbase.

The attacks were in response to “repeated Israeli attacks that targeted various Lebanese regions and led to the fall of many civilian martyrs”, it added.

Earlier in the night, Israel’s military said it detected 10 launches from Lebanon and intercepted most of them. Israeli media reports said one man was slightly wounded in the missile attack.

As we’ve been reporting, Hezbollah’s attacks came after Israel claimed attacks on 400 sites belonging to the group in southern Lebanon. The exchange of fire is the largest since the war on Gaza began.

Schools in the Israeli towns of Acre, Nahariyya, Tiberias and Safed will be closed after Hezbollah’s attacks on northern Israel, the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation has said.

The Times of Israel added that schools in Haifa would be closed as well.

This comes after Hezbollah reportedly sent three batches of projectiles towards the Galilee and east of Haifa.

As we reported earlier, Hezbollah said it fired dozens of missiles at the Ramat David Airbase in northern Israel.

The Wafa news agency is reporting that several Palestinians were killed in an Israeli attack on the central Gaza city.

Gaza’s Civil Defence said the attack targeted the Dawas family home in the Al-Hakr area of the city.

We’ll bring you more soon.

Israeli troops raided Al Jazeera’s office in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank just after 3am local time (00:15 GMT) this morning.

Al Jazeera reported the raid live as it happened.

Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Ramallah is reporting that the Israeli military’s closure order accused the network of “incitement to and support of terrorism”.

Al-Omari said the order has been handed to Al Jazeera’s legal team. (Al Jazeera)
