DCP Central Zone, Smt. Shilpavalli, IPS, highlighted that Thalassemia is a preventable disorder through awareness and timely premarital screening
Hyderabad’Oct 16 (PMI) On the occasion of Police Flag Day, the Saifabad Division of the Central Zone Police organized a blood donation camp at Shah Function Plaza to support patients suffering from Thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder that requires regular transfusions for survival.
A total of 210 participants, including students, civilians, women volunteers, and police personnel, enthusiastically joined the camp. Notable contributors included students from Tapasya College, ICBM College, and Govt Degree College (Khairtabad); youth from Nampally and Khairatabad; and staff from HDFC Bank, DHL, Sriram Life, and IMAX. Police officers, including ACP Sri Sanjay, Sri Venkat Reddy, SHO Khairtabad Sri Narayan Reddy, SHO Nampally Sri Saidulu, DI Khairtabad, SIs, and other staff of the Saifabad Division, also actively participated in this noble initiative.
Speaking at the event, Sri Chandrakanth, Chairman of the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society, emphasized the critical need for the regular availability of safe blood for Thalassemia patients, who require transfusions approximately every 15 days to survive.
DCP Central Zone, Smt. Shilpavalli, IPS, highlighted that Thalassemia is a preventable disorder through awareness and timely premarital screening. She explained that when both partners are Thalassemia Minor carriers, there is a 25% chance that their child may be born with Thalassemia Major, which can lead to lifelong medical challenges. She stressed that avoiding marriage between two carriers and promoting genetic counseling are essential preventive measures.
The DCP also urged the public, especially the youth, to come forward for voluntary blood donation and actively participate in awareness campaigns to help prevent Thalassemia and support affected patients.
The event concluded with words of appreciation for ACP Sri Sanjay, the organizing team, and all generous donors who contributed to making the program a success.
