2,000 medical staff starving as UN mission reaches Gaza

13-03-2024

UNITED NATIONS/ GAZA CITY: The WHO chief says an aid mission managed to reach Al-Shifa Hospital in north Gaza, bringing food and medical supplies, as the Health Ministry says 2,000 medical workers in the north face famine.

The US says Israel has not yet presented a plan to protect civilians in its planned invasion of Rafah as Israel’s self-imposed Ramadan deadline for invasion passes.

Israel has carried out strikes in the vicinity of Lebanon’s Baalbeck, nearly 100km (62 miles) from the Lebanon-Israel border.

Israel imposes restrictions on West Bank worshippers entering Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, as 35,000 gather for prayers on the first day of Ramadan.

At least 31,045 Palestinians have been killed and 72,654 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attacks stands at 1,139, and dozens continue to be held captive.

The US president also said he does not have any plans “at this moment” to address the Israeli parliament as earlier reported by some media.

More than two weeks have now passed since Biden, on a visit to an ice cream shop in New York, said he had hoped to see a ceasefire by Monday.

The Israeli military has said that its fighter jets bombed an underground compound housing senior Hamas leaders in the Nuseirat area of central Gaza early on Sunday morning.

“The compound was used by two of the organisation’s senior leaders: Marwan Issa, who is the deputy of Mohammad Deif and one of the planners of the October 7th massacre”, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said.

“Also in the compound was Aziz Abu Tama’a. Aziz Abu Tama’a, formerly the commander of the Central Camps Brigade, is currently responsible for all of Hamas’s weaponry in Gaza,” he added.

Hagari said that “other terrorists” were inside the tunnel and the Israeli military was still “assessing the results of the strike”, with no confirmed casualties yet.

The director of the CIA, William Burns, has just returned from his eighth visit to the Middle East.

He reiterated what the Biden administration’s position had been in terms of reaching a ceasefire, a three-step process, he explained. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
