Hyderabad, Feb 2 (Raza Nadeem -PMI) In a setback to the Telangana Congress government, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the State’s appeal challenging a High Court order that quashed criminal cases filed against social media activist Shashidhar Goud, popularly known as Nalla Balu.
The case pertains to Goud’s arrest for allegedly retweeting content from the official social media handle of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). In September last year, the Telangana High Court had strongly criticised the police action, terming the arrest illegal and an instance of overreach.
The High Court not only set aside the cases registered against Goud but also issued detailed guidelines aimed at curbing indiscriminate registration of cases and detention of individuals over social media posts.
Aggrieved by the High Court’s decision, the State government moved the Supreme Court and engaged senior advocate Siddharth Luthra to represent its case. However, after hearing arguments from both sides, the apex court rejected the State’s plea and upheld the High Court order.
Reacting to the verdict, former Digital Media Director Konatham Dileep said the ruling was a blow to the government’s attempt to curb dissent. “This verdict is a slap on the face of the Revanth Reddy government for trying to silence dissenting voices,” he said in a post on X.(pressmediaofindia.com)
