No progress in talks as fighting rages in Shujayea: Hamas

01-07-2024

CAIRO/ GAZA CITY: Fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters continued in Gaza City’s Shujayea neighborhood as the United Nations Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) warned of increasingly “desperate” conditions for displaced civilians amid soaring temperatures and the pile up of rubbish and sewage.

A senior Hamas official said there’s been no progress in ceasefire talks, but the Palestinian group remains ready to “deal positively” with any proposal that includes a “permanent ceasefire”.

The Arab League, the European Union, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Qatar slam Israel’s decision to legalize five settlements as an Israeli minister promised to bring “a million” new settlers into the occupied West Bank.

At least 37,834 people have been killed and 86,858 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led attacks is estimated at 1,139, with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.

Wafa reports that Israeli soldiers have arrested six Palestinians during raids across the occupied West Bank.

According to media four Palestinians were arrested in Yatta city, south of Hebron.

Two Palestinians were arrested in al-Ein camp in Nablus.

Israel has arrested at least 9,430 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since October, holding many of them indefinitely in “administrative detention”, an emergency measure Israeli authorities inherited from the colonial British Mandate for Palestine.

The Israeli military plans to continue operating in Gaza as long as “no other international entity is found” to administer the Strip, a process it expects may take “many months”, reports Israel’s Kann broadcaster.

The news outlet cited an unnamed military source in its report.

Israel’s Netanyahu has repeatedly promised to continue the Gaza war until Hamas is defeated and removed from power, but his government has yet to outline a clear vision of Gaza’s post-war governance.

A Palestinian man with a mental health condition, who went missing about a month ago, has returned to his family in Gaza with life-threatening injuries.

His family claims he was detained by Israeli forces in Rafah and subsequently handed over to the Palestine Red Crescent Society. Doctors say he urgently needs treatment outside to survive.

Journalist Hani Mahmoud reports more on this from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.

The Palestinian foreign ministry has issued a statement condemning Israeli authorities’ reported plan to impose taxes on churches in occupied Jerusalem.

“Israel is an occupying power with no sovereignty over Jerusalem,” the ministry said, adding that “Israel’s imposition of these taxes is illegal”.

The plan is part of Israel’s broader “systematic persecution and attacks against Palestinian Christians and clergy”, the ministry added.

The heads of the Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox churches said last week the Israeli municipalities of Tel Aviv, Ramla, Nazareth and Jerusalem had either issued warning letters or commenced legal action against churches for alleged tax debts in recent months.

The church leaders wrote to the Israeli prime minister describing the warnings and legal action as a “coordinated attack” and part of an attempt by “Israeli authorities to drive the Christian presence out of the Holy Land”.

With all the news coming out of Gaza, it has been easy to overlook the low-level war that Israel has been waging with Hezbollah, the paramilitary and political group in next-door Lebanon. (Int’l News Desk)
