Israel continues attacks on Gaza on 2nd day of Eid

01-04-2025

GAZA STRIP: Israeli forces continue attacks on Palestinians observing second day of Eid al-Fitr in Gaza, killing at least nine people, including many children.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has recovered the bodies of 15 emergency workers, a week after their vehicles came under fire from Israeli forces near Rafah in southern Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Hamas must “lay down its weapons”, exile its leaders, and turn over security in Gaza to Israel in order to reach the “final stage” of the ceasefire.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 50,277 Palestinians are confirmed dead and 114,095 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. Gaza’s Government Media Office updated its death toll about two months ago to more than 61,700, saying that thousands of people missing under the rubble are presumed dead.

At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.

Israeli forces have carried out a series of early-morning raids across the occupied West Bank, including in Nablus and the towns of Tammoun, near Tubas, Qabatiya, near Jenin, and Husan, near Bethlehem, according to the Wafa news agency.

In Nablus and the nearby town of Asira ash-Shamaliya, Israeli forces entered Palestinian homes, searched through belongings and temporarily detained and interrogated residents, Wafa reported.

In the towns of Tammoun, Qabatiya and Husan, Israeli forces also raided and searched Palestinian homes while deploying military vehicles throughout the areas, the report said.

The Wafa news agency is reporting that Israeli forces have arrested at least seven young men and set fire to several Palestinian homes in the city of Tulkarem and its refugee camps in the occupied West Bank.

The attacks come as the offensive in Tulkarem city and the Tulkarem refugee camp enters its 64th day, while the operation in the Nur Shams refugee camp continues for its 51st day.

Israeli forces arrested two Palestinians including former prisoner Abdullah Alaria, in raids on their homes in Tulkarem, according to Wafa, and detained five young men at an impromptu checkpoint in a suburb east of the city.

Two of them were released at dawn after being beaten.

In Nur Shams, the soldiers displaced more Palestinian families and set fire to several homes in the al-Manshiyya neighborhood. They also continued bulldozing and destroying infrastructure in the camp, Wafa reported.

Israeli forces have killed at least 13 Palestinians, including a child and two women, one of whom was pregnant, in Tulkarem and its camps since the beginning of the latest campaign. The soldiers have also forcibly displaced at least 4,000 families, completely destroyed 396 homes and partially destroyed 2,573 others.

The comments from Israeli opposition leader Benny Gantz come after Netanyahu’s office announced plans to appoint a former Navy commander as the next head of the internal security agency.

Gantz described Netanyahu’s choice, retired Vice Admiral Eli Sharvit, as “an excellent person and commander, ethical and experienced”.

However, by announcing the decision to appoint Sharvit before Israel’s Supreme Court rules on a petition against his predecessor’s dismissal, Netanyahu is continuing “his campaign against the judicial system” and leading Israel “towards a dangerous constitutional crisis”, Gantz said.

“The appointment of the head of the Shin Bet must take place only after a Supreme Court decision,” he added. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
